Sarah Fox and Sue Chiappa pick up pickleball bronze medals in Ohio
Bermudian duo Sarah Fox and Sue Chiappa clinched bronze at the inaugural Association of Pickleball Players Women's Open in Columbus, Ohio.
Fox and Chiappa were competing in the 3.5 60+ division. At the same tournament, the pair also won bronze with their respective partners on the final day.
The event, held from Friday to Sunday at Pickle & Chill, sought to celebrate the best in women's pickleball, as well as supporting breast cancer research.
Chiappa, who is heading off to Arizona for the United States Pickleball National Championships next month, was delighted to play in the maiden event.
“I had the privilege of playing in the inaugural APP Women’s Open in Ohio sponsored by The James, the Ohio State University comprehensive cancer centre,’’ Chiappa said.
“My partner, Sarah Fox, and I, won the bronze medal in the women’s doubles 3.5. I also won a bronze medal in the ladies ”pot-luck partner” event, 50+ 3.5.
“The tournament was wonderfully run and I am already looking forward to playing next year”.
Fox was pleased to be part of an event that saw over 250 women from all age groups participating in a vibrant and exciting atmosphere, as well as raise $25,000 for breast cancer research.
“I feel so grateful to have participated,’’ she said.
“The funds raised will benefit the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
“Bermuda is hosting a similar event this weekend with the Dink for Pink at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium.”
Val Stevenson, the organiser of the annual Dink for Pink initiative, has urged women to register for Saturday’s event.
“The Dink for Pink Pickleball fundraiser is a fun women-only event held in October, in honour of Cancer Awareness Month,’’ Stevenson said.
“Four years ago, a handful of pickleball-loving mothers decided it would be fun to throw a tournament to raise funds for cancer.
“The event has grown more popular every year. It is no longer a tournament, but just open play and more social. All proceeds will go to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre this year. Last year we donated to Pals.
“This year’s event is at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium this Saturday October, with a rain date of Sunday.”
Women who are beginners to advanced are welcome. For more information and to register go to dinkforpinkbda.com.
