Singing in the dark: Bermuda’s volleyball team were forced to sing national anthem a cappella during power cut

The senior women’s volleyball team have a perfect 3-0 record after winning two games at the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Championships on Saturday.

The Bermuda squad, who had beaten Sint Maarten in straight sets on Friday night, overcame a power cut at the venue before prevailing in a five-set thriller against reigning champions St Lucia on Saturday afternoon before fighting through the fatigue to beat Anguilla in the evening.

Before the game against St Lucia, Bermuda were forced to sing the national anthem a capella with the gym out of power and they struggled to adjust to the dim lighting early before recovering to win 15-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-21, 15-9.

In a pulsating game, some key tactical changes ultimately proved the difference, with one of the squad’s youngest players proving influential.

“We made some strategic changes and the girls adjusted well,” assistant coach Kayla Grant said.

“Notably, we put in 15-year-old Olivia Gazzard as a relief setter, and she did more than hold her own. The team rallied around her and the energy of the game made a noticeable shift.”

The second game against Anguilla may not have been quite as exciting for spectators, with Bermuda winning 25-17, 25-21, 25-16, but coach Shaela Rae was pleased with the performance.

“We took them straight in three sets,” she said. “There was some crowd-riveting smashes from Kayley Hamilton and Natalie Gazzard as well as some monster blocks from Megan Hands and Sharri Weldon.”

Bermuda complete pool play by taking on local favourites Antigua at 8pm Bermuda time on Sunday and Grenada at 8pm on Monday as they remain in contention to play in the gold-medal match on Tuesday.
