Bermuda women rule waves on first day of Gig Regatta

The winning Bermuda team on day one of the International Gig Rowing regatta

The Bermuda Pilot Gig Club’s International Regatta opened with thrilling competition on Sunday despite challenging weather conditions.

Northeasterly winds exceeding 20 knots and occasional squalls put the crews to the test, but the sun shone through providing respite for the ten female and six male crews.

In the Ladies final, victory went to Bermuda as Seas The Day consisting of Alexandra Amat, Hattie Armstrong, Laura Lyons, Pamela Mahoney, Joanne Rogers and Hillary Williams came out on top, beating a crew from Cornwall in the UK into second.

The Ladies Plate final was won by the 3D’s, with visiting team Tamar River (Christie Ash, Evie Burfoot, Claire-Louise Burke, Angela Copeland, Clare Lanyon-Webb and Leonie Timmins), also from the south west of England, winning the Ladies runner-up final.

The men’s final produced a thrilling finish with Triangle 3, a team made up of visiting crew from various clubs (Simon Burke, Leigh Morden, James Neep, Robert Jeffery, Rob Guy and Steve McArdell crossing the finish line off Mangrove Bay first.

The men’s runner-up final featured a close race with two local crews fighting it out. Able Seaman (Roger Gillett, Omar Green, Christopher Hardy, Matthew Harling, Richard Mansfield, Niall O’Hare) just beat BPGC.

Day two of racing features the break-up of day one crews with new teams in place at Spanish Point on Wednesday, with the original crews reuniting for the St. George’s Sprint on Saturday.
