Bermuda women to play for gold medal in Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Championships
Bermuda’s women’s volleyball team will play in the gold-medal match in the Eastern Caribbean Championships on Tuesday night.
In a clash of two unbeaten teams on Sunday evening, Bermuda beat the host nation Antigua 3-1 to maintain their 100 per cent record and qualify for the final with a game to spare.
Victory against Antigua means Bermuda, who were seeded bottom before the tournament but are the only team in the competition to remain unbeaten, can afford to lose against Grenada in their last group game on Monday night and still make the final.
After the game coach Shaela Rae was interviewed on local TV in Antigua and was understandably thrilled with her team’s performance.
“The mood is ecstatic right now,” she said.
“We are thrilled and relieved as we knew Antigua would be the team to beat, but we prepared for it and thrilled to have pulled it off.”
In front of a partisan local crowd, Bermuda’s young team were forced to often play through a wall of noise and Rae was pleased with how the squad kept their composure.
“We prepared for it,” Rae said. “We had a lot of team talks together and talked about strategies on how to overcome the crowd. We knew it was going to be loud and annoying at times but we just had to focus and bring our energy to overcome their energy.”
