Lindo’s Tigers fire warning shots in netball league
Lindo’s Tigers started their campaign in the Bermuda Netball Association Senior League with a huge 64-10 triumph over Hamilton Parish at Bernard Park on Tuesday night.
Candace Paynter led the way for Tigers with 22 goals. She was supported by the Trott twins, Jahtuere and Jahkenya, with the former contributing 20 goals to pick up the best attacker’s award, and the latter scoring ten .
Nahjae Raynor weighed in with 12 goals as last season’s runners-up made a huge statement. Micah Pond walked away with the MVP award for Tigers, while Demiqua Daniels was adjudged the most outstanding defender.
Jahtuere Trott, the Tigers captain, was pleased with the performance in the season opener.
“It was a good first game back for us and it was an expected win,’’ she said.
“For Peppers, it was the first time they were playing in the league, so they had a good feel of what to expect.
“I don’t think we gave them a hard time, but it was definitely an eye-opener for them. We really feel good about this season. A lot of us said we were retiring at the end of last season, but for the love of the game we couldn’t walk away.
“We just want to have fun and see where it takes us. We’re ready for a competitive season.”
For Parish, Kiara Francis contributed seven goals, their best attacker Kessiah Jackson scored two while Kylah Hunt netted once. Alexis Pascal was deemed the MVP and best defender for Parish.
Reacting to the defeat, Debbie Brown, Donna Smith and Juanita Easton, the Parish co-coaches, looked at the brighter side of things.
“Despite a tough loss, we couldn't be prouder of our team,’’ the Parish coaching department said.
“Facing one of the league's strongest teams, our girls showed remarkable resilience and determination.
“This game was a learning experience, and we will come back stronger and better prepared. A big thank you to our fans for the unwavering support, we’re on this journey together.”
Parish president Nandi Outerbridge expressed her hope that the side will get better as the season progresses.
“Our netball team is a new and developing group,” Outerbridge said. “Although they lost their first game, we have seen great improvement in their play.
“It's a promising start, and we're confident they'll continue to grow stronger as they gain more experience.
“We are excited to have a group of young ladies on board that has further extended our commitment to growing a diverse membership within our community club.
“The commitment that each young lady has made to this new team is impressive. We look forward to rooting for them in future games.”
On Monday, Darika Simons scored 29 goals as North Village overcame St George’s 51-24. Jordyn Morris was on target 14 times and Coriah Simmons had eight goals to round off the scoring for Village.
Taahira Butterfield was rated as the best attacker for the victorious side. Jada Richard got the nod for the most outstanding defender and Zhanae Simmons was deemed the best MVP for Village.
Nisiah Berkeley, the best attacker for St George’s, led the way with 14 goals with the rest coming from Kristin Holman. Jasmaine Adams won two awards on the night, as she was considered the most outstanding defender and MVP for St George’s.
