Bermuda players win medals in Pickleball World Cup warm-up
Bermuda players are building confidence ahead of the Pickleball World Cup by winning medals in the event leading up to the global showpiece.
Imani Phillips, 22, the youngest female player in the team, won two medals, combining yesterday with Melisa Judd to win gold in the women’s doubles a couple of days after she clinched silver in the women's singles 3.5.
Alvaro Triana and Jaden Jones teamed up to win bronze in the men’s doubles 4.0 after defeating Jairo Rosales of the United States and Venezuela’s Leo Stango, while Gavin Manders, Bermuda’s former Davis Cup player, secured bronze in the men’s singles 4.5.
Danny Fox, one of the Pickleball Association Bermuda vice-presidents, is delighted with the display by the island’s players in the build-up to the World Cup.
“We are off to a fantastic start,” Fox said. “The team is really bonding and we have lots of support at each event. I’m really pleased to see how we stack up with much larger countries.
“It’s very special to represent your country. The results of all the hard work and training is paying dividends.”
Bermuda has a squad of 14 players for the Pickleball World Cup, which starts in Lima, Peru, on Saturday and Sunday.
