Lindo’s Tigers early leaders in netball league
Lindo’s Tigers picked up their second win in the Bermuda Netball Association Senior League after posting a 47-8 victory over St George’s at Bernard Park on Tuesday night.
The win was enough for Anthony Mouchette’s side to climb to the top of the seven-team standings with six points, ahead of Storm on goal difference.
Captain Jahtuere Trott top scored with 20 goals for Tigers, followed by Candace Paynter on 16, while Nahjae Raynor was on target 11 times.
Jordyn Ming was voted the best attacker for Tigers, Diara Benjamin took home the most outstanding defender and Demiqua Daniels got the nod as MVP.
Daniels, who was solid at the back for the winning team, conceded that St George’s made them work hard for the win.
“The match was intense and we definitely had to stick to our game plan,’’ Daniels said. “It feels great to win the MVP even though I feel that we did it as a team, we just worked hard and gave it all to the final whistle.
“It’s very exciting for us to win two out of two. We just have to keep focused on our own game and not get caught up in what our opponents are doing.”
The goals for St George’s came from Kristin Holman with five and Stacy Brown, who contributed three points to win best attacker. Jasmaine Adams was voted the most outstanding defender and MVP for the vanquished side.
Adams believes that despite the defeat St George’s are growing in confidence as the season progresses and they are targeting their first win of the season when they face newcomers Hamilton Parish on Saturday.
“I felt like we played well,” she said. “We played our positions and took our time, so I think we made progress.
“Our downfall was not being able to make our shots count. We didn't manage to get our rebounds and we also gave the ball away.
“We have another match on Saturday and we’ll turn things around. We’ll make sure that we look at our footwork, control our passes and just take our time.”
In Saturday’s league matches, Phoenix Heat, the defending champions, started their title defence with a commanding 62-2 triumph over the bottom side Parish. The second match saw Storm record their second win on the trot, as they defeated North Village 50-32.
Saturday marked the return of Heat wing attack Eshé Grant from injury after missed the better part of last season with a ruptured Achilles.
It was a joyful day for the Grant family as mother and daughter were voted the best players for their respective teams. Sanaa, Eshé’s daughter, was deemed the best player for Phoenix Fire in the 18 and under league earlier on in the day.
With Danielle Raynor, the league’s top goalscorer last season out injured, Grant was assigned the role of goal attack, from where she scored 30 goals, two less than Keizhari Knight.
“Coming from injury and being named MVP feels good,” Grant said. “I didn’t think I was going to get back to my same confidence coming into this first game.
“My recovery and therapy was hard after the surgery, but in the game my injury gave me no problems. After the warm-up I felt like it was going to be OK, and it feels incredible to be back on the netball court with my sisters.
“Our team is full of depth, despite injuries, our coach figures out a plan to ensure we get the results. Danielle will be a big miss for us, but we will adjust accordingly.”
After playing against Tigers and Heat to open their maiden season in the netball league, Parish captain Destini Hill-Edwards spoke of what they have grasped so far.
“The experience has been intense but ultimately positive so far,” she said. “The team has improved its communication skills both on and off the court, while also gaining insights into the strengths and weaknesses of our opponents to leverage them to our advantage.
“We've learnt to focus on our own game and techniques instead of merely trying to match the other team’s style. Sharpening our skills is essential for the league, and with continued practice and dedication, there’s no doubt the team will grow stronger over time.”
