Bermuda finish sixth at Para Bowling World Championships
Bermuda athletes have been applauded for showcasing their determination and skill in the face of tough competition at the International Bowling Federation World Championships, which concluded in Hong Kong on Tuesday.
Jayvyn Iris, Teven Graham, Alshauntae Symonds, and Ciara Bell flew Bermuda’s flag. The four were under the mentorship of Chandra Lee Bascome, who was supported by assistant coach Juanita Easton, team medic Chris Cunningham and national director Karen Woollery.
Despite facing challenges, which included illness and injury, the athletes gave an inspiring performance. In the mixed competition, Bermuda secured a respectable sixth-place finish.
In the singles events, Symonds and Bell placed nineteenth and 20th, respectively, while Iris finished 27th in the men’s competition.
The Bermuda delegation was the only regular Special Olympics team in the competition, competing against top-tier international athletes. It is hoped that the experience gained at the championships will strengthen the team’s future performances and inspire greater participation in the sport.
The Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors Tinée Furbert, celebrated the team’s achievement.
“Our Special Olympics athletes continue to make Bermuda proud with their resilience and passion,’’ Furbert said.
“Competing on the world stage requires immense dedication, and despite challenges, they showcased incredible determination. We celebrate their achievements and the invaluable support from their coaches and staff.”
Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, commended the athletes for their determination.
“Team Bermuda’s performance at the IBF Para World Championships is a testament to their hard work and perseverance,” he said.
“Their achievements in Hong Kong highlight the strength of our Special Olympics programme, and we remain committed to supporting these exceptional athletes in their future endeavours.”
