Jaydon Roberts shot his way to glory at the Easton Youth & Collegiate Trophy Tournament in Pennsylvania at the weekend.

The Bermudian archer won the junior recurve male competition in fine style after shooting a personal best score of 580 along the way after remaining focused in the final day of competition at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex on Sunday.

“I knew what I needed to do and overall I was very pleased with my new personal best,” he told The Royal Gazette.

The 19-year-old also impressed in the Lancaster Archery Classic, in which he finished 32nd among a field of 101 and set a then under-21 recurve national record with a then personal-best score of 573 during the qualifying rounds.

Roberts reached the elimination round where he lost to world No. 1 Brady Ellison.

“I had a good weekend of competition and was ready for the eliminations in the Lancaster Archery Classic,” he added.

“I was paired up against the No. 1 archer in the world and went into the match very confident.”

Also representing Bermuda in the Lancaster Archery Classic were father and son William and Camerin Pickering, Bernard Wade III and Jamie Fraser.

Pickering finished an impressive fifteenth overall and also set a new senior recurve national record with a score of 590 during the qualifying rounds.

Pickering’s father finished 67th among the field of 150 archers in the masters compound event, also shooting his way to a national record with a score of 602 during the qualifying rounds, where he was eliminated.

Wade and Fraser also stumbled at the first hurdle, finishing 48th and 78th respectively.

Also flying the island’s flag in the Easton Youth & Collegiate Trophy Tournament along with Roberts were Braedon Fraser, Robin Selley, Elektra Smith and N’Dera Smith.

Fraser finished twelfth among the 20-strong field in the recurve bowmen male event and Selley nineteenth among a field of 45 in the recurve cadet female competition.

Elektra Smith and N’Dera Smith competed together in the recurve junior female event, where they finished tenth and eleventh among the field of eleven archers.

Ross Roberts, the head coach of the National Archery Association of Bermuda, hailed the island’s overall showing at the event, in particular those making their international debut.

“There were great performances from all our archers,” he said.

“We had four new archers join us for their first international shoot in Elektra Smith, N’Dera Smith, Braeden Fraser and Jamie Fraser.

“This was a great experience for them and their results are where we anticipated them to be.

“Camerin shot extremely well in the rounds of 32 and 16. Unfortunately, his opponent in the round of 16 had more Xs, which broke the tie with their scores.

“Jaydon kept his mental composure as he went up against the world’s number one archer and shot very well.

“The Easton Shoot had Jaydon podium in first place in the junior recurve division. He started strong and had a very strong finish.”
