Unbeaten Lindo’s Tigers close in on netball title
The Trott twins stole show for Lindo's Tigers as Jahkenya and Jahtuere scored all the goals for their team to inch closer to winning the Bermuda Netball Association Winter League for the first time when they triumphed 41-16 over champions Phoenix Heat at Bernard Park on Saturday.
Jahkenya led the scoring with 31 points while Jahtuere, the captain, chipped in with ten goals. The eleventh straight win for Tigers, to complete a double over Heat, lifted Anthony Mouchette’s side to 33 points, eight ahead of Storm, who have played two games less.
Khianda Pearman-Watson was adjudged the MVP and most outstanding defender for Tigers, with the attacker’s accolade going to Micah Pond.
The title will now be decided when Tigers square off against Storm on March 8. Before that, Storm have a chance to close the gap when they face Hamilton Parish on Thursday and Docksiders two days later in rescheduled fixtures.
If Tigers do win the championship, it will be the first time for all the players in the team to taste such success.
“I’ve been playing netball for over 15 years and I've never won the league,” the Tigers captain said. “It’s very rewarding to see all our hard work coming to fruition.
“We’re going to take our last game against Storm like we've been approaching all our other matches. We've got our goals to achieve but we’re taking it one game at a time.
“If we win that match against Storm, the league is ours so we just have to win. I think even if we lose to Storm, we can still have that No 1 spot on goal difference.
“It’s been a crazy season because of the weather, which has seen games being pushed back. That was a challenge for every team and it really killed the momentum.”
For Heat, who slipped down to fourth after North Village triumphed 73-9 over Hamilton Parish on the same day, their goals came from attacker Kammie Mills, together with Keizhari Knight and Sydney Santos. Stacia Ming was voted the MVP and Imani Smith took the defender’s accolade.
MVP Apryl Jackson top scored for Village with 25 points, followed by Zhanae Simmons on 22, Coriah Simmons contributed 21 goals and Jada Richards was on target five times.
Alexi Pascal and Kessiah Jackson scored four goals apiece for Parish and one came from Shayna Simmons. It was the tenth defeat of the season for Parish who are still to pick up a win in their first season in the league.
