N’Dera Smith provides more success for Bermuda’s archers
A fine weekend for Bermuda’s archers continued when N’Dera Smith retained her title in the Pennsylvania State JOAD Indoor Championship – East & West.
While Robin Selley and Elektra Smith competed in Argentina in a Junior Pan American Games qualifier, in which Selley won the bronze medal, N’Dera Smith produced another solid display at Bill’s Archery Centre in Transfer, Pennsylvania, to tighten her grip on the under-21 women’s recurve title and end another fruitful indoors season with a bang.
Smith, 19, was happy with her performance and delighted to have come away victorious again in the competition.
“This was a great end to the season and it feels great,” she told The Royal Gazette. “Everything did go pretty smoothly and it was only tough towards the end because I got tired, but that’s always expected.
“My main focus towards success was taking my time and shooting one arrow at a time, as my coaches always tell me.”
It was the second successive podium display for the former CedarBridge Academy student after she finished runner-up in the under-21 women’s recurve competition, and sixth overall, on her debut at the Western Pennsylvania JOAD Indoor Shooter of the Year Finals at the same venue the previous weekend.
Smith made it all the way to the final but ultimately came up just short of glory after losing to rival Norah Butchy in the shoot-offs.
The Westmoreland County Community College student, who also holds US citizenship and trains and competes as a member of Crowfoot Sportsmen’s Club in Pennsylvania, has also tasted success representing Bermuda after claiming the silver medal in the women’s recurve junior division competition at the 2023 Fall Harvest Star FITA tournament in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
