Warwick II clinch historic snooker league title
Steven Bremar, the Warwick Workmen’s Club II captain, has hailed his team’s historic snooker league title defence.
The champions went undefeated on the way to back-to-back league titles, which they sealed after coming from behind to defeat Royal Artillery Association 4-1 at their home venue in the last round of league action.
“As a team we have done extremely well and I want to thank my fellow team-mates on their performance,” Bremar told The Royal Gazette.
“It’s always an honour to win the league. It’s a big trophy and hard to win because the competition is intense and you have to be real consistent.”
Warwick II’s team also comprised Henryk Marszalek, Zane DeSilva, Steven Tucker and Steven Bremar Jr.
Bremar singled out Marszalek for his huge contribution towards the team’s unprecedented success.
“Henryk only lost one game all season which was a real plus to retaining our title and being undefeated,” he said.
Having all but retained their title heading into the contest against RAA, Warwick II were forced to play catch up after RAA’s Aaron Bean defeated Marszalek 43-27 in the first of their two frames together – the latter’s only loss of the campaign.
However, the visitors lead was short-lived as DeSilva beat rival Kyle Williams 64-43 in the next frame to bring the teams level.
Warwick II then surged ahead after Marszalek defeated Bean 67-41 in the second frame between the pair to avenge his earlier loss to this opponent.
Bremar was then forced to dig deep in a gruelling battle with opposite number Kenya Trott, who took him all the way to the pink ball, before ultimately prevailing 44-31 to clinch the series and back-to-back league titles for the hosts and complete the perfect season.
With nothing other than bragging rights at stake, Bremar and DeSilva then dispatched Williams and Trott 57-11 in the doubles contest.
Bremar and his fellow team-mates have now set their sights on achieving the three-peat next season.
“That’s the aim. The aim is to keep on going,” he said.
Elsewhere, hosts Sandys Boat Club beat Spanish Point Boat Club II 4-1.
Paul Fedden gave the hosts the lead after taking down rival Richard Burton 61-37 in the opening frame.
Martin Siese then prevailed against Tyler Moniz 42-31 in the second frame to double his team’s advantage.
Richie Beale then clinched the series after defeating rival Alan Smith 58-36 in the first of their two frames together.
Smith finally put the visitors on the board after getting past Beale 61-47 in the second frame between the pair to deny the hosts the sweep before Siese and Fedden overcame Moniz and Burton 59-16 in the doubles contest.
The remaining league contest saw Warwick Workmen’s Club I edge hosts Spanish Point Boat Club I 3-2.
Gary Bascome gave the visitors the early lead after dispatching Alex Hooper 65-24 in the first frame but Point came storming back through Todd Dziak, who beat Pamela Quadroy 57-37 in the first of their two frames together to level the series.
Warwick regained the lead after Smith and Bascome got past Hooper and Greenslade 81-24 in the doubles contest before Smith clinched the series for the visitors after coming away with a convincing 70-12 win over Stewart Greenslade.
Dziak pulled one back for the hosts after seeing off Quadroy 44-6 in the second of their two frames together in equally convincing fashion.
In Tony DeSilva Memorial Cup quarter-final action, Matt Garrod beat Bean 2-1 and will face the winner between Nadanja Bailey and Bremar, who edged Burton 2-1, in the semi-final.
Also advancing in the competition was Dziak after defeating DeSilva 2-0 to set up a semi-final meeting with John Orr.
In the Bermuda Open Singles quarter-final, Keino Zuill edged Dziak 2-1 while Orr prevailed 2-0 against Fedden. Zuill and Orr will now meet in the semi-final.
Bremar also kept his title hopes alive after coming away with a convincing 2-0 win over rival Chris Dakin in a rescheduled first round contest and will now face Bean in the next round.
