Some of Bermuda’s top footballers showcased their netball talent in the Mix Up Switch Up tournament that was won by Storm at Bernard Park on Saturday.

PHC goalkeeper Quinaceo Hunt and Josh Hardtman, the Young Men’s Social Club forward, shored up Storm with coach Antoine Williams.

North Village footballers Detre Bell, Seke Spence and Tah-mi Williams appeared for the club’s netball team, while Devonshire Cougars striker Elisha Darrell and Brighton Swan, of Social Club, played for Phoenix Heat.

Dandy Town’s Jahzardae Samuels and Donte Brangman (Southampton Rangers) plus Mical Hardtman of Social Club featured for Tigers.

Bell, who started on the bench for Village against PHC on Sunday, is eager to familiarise himself with the netball regulations.

“I need to read the rulebook for netball next time so that I can have a better understanding of the game,” the Village captain told The Royal Gazette. “It wasn’t that easy for me. I play goalkeeper in every sport because I don’t like running!”

Hunt, who played in defence, also struggled to understand the laws of the game.

“I enjoyed playing in the netball tournament on Saturday,” the PHC goalkeeper said.

“It’s a different sport that men don’t play, so it’s hard to understand what’s going on. As an athlete, I always want to learn and understand different sports.

“Netball is a complex sport when you don’t understand what you’re doing. But overall it’s a fun sport to watch and enjoy playing.”

Spence, who did not feature for Village against PHC on Sunday, had such a great experience trying out netball that he cannot wait to be invited back.

“I enjoyed playing netball for the first time,” the Village midfielder said. “I just played for fun and found it enjoyable. I don’t know the rules enough, but I know enough to be good at it.”

Debré Evans, the Storm captain, took pleasure in defeating Lindo’s Tigers, who beat them to the league title.

“At Storm, we always enjoy the mixed tournament, it’s one of our favourites,” Evans said.

“We’ve had the same team for years. We always have the same males that come out because they love and enjoy the sport just as much as us.

“We’ve won the tournament back-to-back for a while now, so we take it seriously so we can defend our legacy.

“It’s always a super fun and hilarious day, but in the end we want to walk away with a win. It’s always funny watching the guys so discombobulated over a sport they like to talk down. It’s a moment of “Not as easy as you thought, right?”.

“Nevertheless I think more guys should come out and try netball, they’d probably use muscles and bones they never knew they had.

“It was nice for the Bermuda Netball Association to implement the Fast5 in the code this year. Although we didn’t go down to five men, we still kept the scoring of Fast5, which meant a lot of long ball shots from outside the shooting circle so people could secure three points instead of the usual one point.

“Jahkenya Trott from Tigers absolutely capitalised on that and made it look so easy. I’m proud of my team, everyone should stay tuned for the Summer League and keep their eyes on Storm Chasers, which is our name in that league.”

Meanwhile, the best junior players were honoured at an awards ceremony held at Northlands Primary School.

In the non-competitive under-11 league, A'Mariss Dyer was voted the players’ player of the season. Phoenix Embers defender Kenzi McCreary took the 14 years and under MVP, with the same accolade for the 18 years and under going to Jaya Dillas from Phoenix Fire, the league’s champions.
