Warwick Workmen’s Club II continued their brilliant season after regaining the Island Construction Cup.

Having already retained their snooker league title with an unblemished record, Warwick II defeated hosts Royal Artillery Association 3-1 in the final to clinch their second title of the season.

Team newcomer and former Warwick and Southampton Rangers footballer Stephen Tucker gave the visitors the lead after prevailing against RAA captain Kenya Trott 52-16 in the opening frame.

Steven Bremar, the Warwick II captain, then doubled his team’s advantage after dispatching Kyle Williams 55-20 in the second frame.

With their backs against the wall heading into the next frame, RAA’s Aaron Bean took out Zane DeSilva, the Progressive Labour Party deputy leader and Minister of Housing and Municipalities, 61-41 to shave the deficit in half and keep the hosts’ victory hopes alive.

However, as he has done throughout the season, Henryk Marszalek delivered for Warwick II when they needed him most, digging deep to get past rival Keino Zuill 54-37 and seal the deal.

Warwick II captain Bremar was delighted to come away victorious and hailed his team’s efforts.

“It's always a good feeling to win a trophy, especially the big ones,” he told The Royal Gazette. “lt was a team effort and once again I have to thank my team.

“It was definitely a tough match. RAA have a good team and have players that love to pot balls and know the game.”

Bremar singled out team-mates Marszalek and Tucker for their valuable contributions towards his team’s latest success.

“Henryk has had a good season and I have to thank him again because he won the final game,” Bremar said. “He needed all 18 points for a re-spot and got them and ended up winning on the black ball, so it was really close.

“I also have to thank our rookie, Stephen Tucker, who has played four or five cup games and lost just one.”

In Bermuda Open Singles semi-final action at Spanish Point Boat Club, John Orr prevailed 3-2 over Zuill and will square off against an opponent yet to be determined in the final at Watford Sports Club.

Also keeping their cup hopes alive was defending champion Bremar, who defeated Bean 2-0 in a quarter-final clash at RAA.

Bremar now faces Warwick II team-mate Marszalek in the semi-final at Warwick Workmen’s Club.

In the opening round of the Bermuda Open Doubles competition at Spanish Point, Paul Fedden and Tyler Moniz beat Gary Bascome and Winslow Smith 2-1 and will now face John Orr and Matt Garrod in the quarter-final at the same venue.

Also advancing was the team of Alan Smith and Fred Richardson, who dispatched rivals Marszalek and Richard Burton 2-0. Smith and Richardson will now do battle with the eventual winner of the quarter-final between Fedden and Moniz and Orr and Garrod in the semi-final.

A new Keen Cup champion will be crowned this year after hosts Sandys Boat Club recorded a 3-0 whitewash over defending champions Spanish Point Boat Club I in a repeat of last year’s final, which the latter won 3-2.

Tyler Siese got Sandys off to a flying start when he beat Alex Hooper 52-28 in the opening frame.

Team captain Martin Siese then doubled the hosts advantage after coming away with a 56-22 triumph over Stewart Greenslade 56-22 in the next frame.

Fedden, the Bermuda Snooker Association president, sealed the win and completed the whitewash for Sandys Boat Club by overpowering rival Chris Dakin 64-22 in the third frame.

Sandys Boat Club will now face RAA in the final.
