Bermuda's annual Tiger Woods watch can take place again this year after the PGA confirmed they would be bringing the PGA Grand Slam of Golf back to the Island.Every year since the tournament first came to Bermuda four years ago residents have waited with baited breath to see if the game's greatest player would come if he won a major. So far Tiger watchers have been left disappointed, but with the tournament now due to take place at Port Royal Golf Course this year and next, Woods has eight more chances to qualify for the most exclusive event on the golfing calendar.“We're very excited about it and for what it means for golf in Bermuda,” said Andrew Brooks, Port Royal's director of golf. “It's great news.”This year's event will begin on Monday, October 17 with the Pro-Am, and the Grand Slam itself will follow on October 18-19.Tourism Minister Patrice Minors was on hand at the 2011 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando to make yesterday's announcement alongside PGA of America president Allen Wronowski, and Minors said she was thrilled with the decision.“Several years ago, we made it one of our top priorities to attract a televised golf event that would deliver the world's best players and showcase Bermuda as a first-class golf destination,” said Minors.“The PGA Grand Slam of Golf was fruits of our hard work and determination.“Now four years later, our relationship with the PGA of America is one that has grown from strength to strength, and we are so pleased that we are continuing this special partnership into 2011 and 2012.“I am absolutely thrilled to be here to officially announce that Bermuda will once again be hosting the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at the Port Royal Golf Course.”In the past not everyone has supported the Government's decision to spend the reported $1.5 million that it costs to host the event, but Minors said that the exposure Bermuda received through the Slam was priceless.“This clearly signifies that the PGA recognises Bermuda as a premier destination to host one of their biggest golfing events,” she said.“It is a ringing endorsement of our little jewel of an Island from one of the most influential sports organisations in the world.“The exposure that Bermuda receives from this event cannot be understated.”The PGA appear equally happy to be returning to Bermuda.“The PGA of America is honoured to continue the PGA Grand Slam of Golf tradition in Bermuda through 2012,” said Wronowski.“Bermuda has embraced the PGA Grand Slam of Golf over the past several years, delivering unmatched hospitality and community support for golf's elite visiting foursome.“We are excited to once again join the Bermuda Department of Tourism in showcasing Bermuda as a premier golf tourism destination and hosting the PGA Grand Slam of Golf to the world.”n Port Royal hopes the excitment the announcement generates will encourage more people to take up the game and have launched a series of specials for next month.Course fees for locals will be reduced to $90, including cart, with seniors paying $70. Also, anyone wanting to take up the game, or polish their skills, can get five lessons for the price of four.See attached link to the Bermuda segment of the media round table.www.pgamediacenter.com/videos/bermudaroundtable.cfm
