WITH SLIDESHOW: Toms takes first day lead in PGA Grand Slam

David Toms tees of on the tenth. He ended up leading the field on day one by one shot.

2001 PGA Champion David Toms shrugged off his late invitation by taking the first-round lead in the 28th PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Bermuda’s Port Royal course.

Toms fired a four-under-par 67, giving him a one-shot lead over three-time major champion Ernie Els.

U.S. Open Champion Graeme McDowell overcame a triple-bogey on the par-four 11th by finishing birdie-birdie to sign for a one-over 72. PGA Champion Martin Kaymer is seven shots back after carding a 74. Toms jumped to the lead with a four-birdie, front-nine 32.

First-round scores:

David Toms, 67 (-4)

Ernie Els, 68 (-3)

Graeme McDowell, 72 (+1)

Martin Kaymer, 74 (+3)
