Tiger's absence 'good for the game'

Bob Bubka has been describing golf to the world for the past 20 years and when he talks, people stop and listen.

The voice of the PGA Tour, Bubka tipped Lucas Glover to win the US Open when the golfer was a 250-1 long-shot on the eve of the event, and reportedly cost bookmakers Paddy Power more than $2million in the process.

So when he says that this month's Grand Slam is going to be a compelling, highly competitive event, including a player he described as 'Tiger's worst nightmare', people take notice because he should know.

The end-of-season tournament featuring the winners of golf's four majors takes place at Port Royal on October 20-21.

No matter then that Tiger Woods isn't coming, the four best golfers are the only four out of hundreds of touring professionals around the globe to win the trophies that everyone wants.

And for Bubka, it will be the first time this year that the four major winners are the only ones that everyone is talking about.

"This is probably the only time where we have four major winners when the big story as the event ended was about somebody else," said Bubka. "Lucas Glover won the US Open but all the talk was about Phil Mickelson, Angel Cabrera won the Masters but all the talk was about Kenny Perry losing it, Stewart Cink won the Open but all the talk was about Tom Watson.

"And of course, Y.E. Yang won the PGA and all the talk was about Tiger. It's been a very, very unusual year for majors. This easily would be the most unusual collection of major winners.

"But it's good for the game, it brings some fresh new faces and quite frankly I think the Grand Slam is going to be very compelling because I think it is going to be very competitive. Cabrera's been there once before, but the other three are going to be experiencing it for the first time, and I think it'll be exciting to watch."

For many in Bermuda the loss of Woods has detracted from an event he was expected to be at, but Bubka believes that far from making it worse, the event will be stronger for the absence of the world's best golfer, and the inclusion of the man who beat him, Yang.

"Of course, the people of Bermuda would love to see Tiger, but there was no guarantee he would come had he won," said Bubka. "And if I was in Bermuda I would want to see the player that beat Tiger and paired with him to boot.

"Y.E. Yang is a very, very harworking, meticulous individual. Having met him after his victory, I'm totally impressed with his work ethic and his mind, he is very strong mentally, that's why Tiger didn't bother him.

"That was like Tiger's worst nightmare to be honest, that he had to go against Y.E. Yang because had he gone against anybody else there was a pretty good chance they would have folded."

And despite beating Woods, Yang isn't being picked by Bubka to win the Grand Slam and he isn't backing Glover.

"I think it's going to be really close," he said, "but if I had to wager on anybody, I would wager on Stewart Cink."
