BGA take a youthful approach
Bermuda Golf Association have opted for a mixture of youth and experience in choosing their teams for the Island Games this summer.Camiko Smith will lead the men in the defence of their gold medal, while counter-part Laura Robinson will look to do the same with a strong ladies team.Smith will be joined in the Isle of Wight by Ryan Benevides, Alex Osborne and Damian Palanyandi. That means going without Jarryd Dillas who both won individual medals two years ago. However team manager Scott Roy is confident that the side the BGA have picked will prove equally successful.“We’ve come up with the best players that we felt gelled well together, and hopefully will perform well,” said Roy.In choosing the team the BGA opted to give youth a chance, especially as they felt that some of the Island’s better young players had missed out in the past.“We did go with a much younger team, especially in the men’s division, to give those players who come up through junior golf a look into what comes after junior golf,” said Roy.“Unfortunately over the last couple of years once you leave junior golf they feel it’s (international competition) finished unless you become a member of a golf club. We wanted to show that we’re more than just amatuer golf and big championships, we’re into player development as well.“Ryan Benevides had a great performance in the stroke play in June, Alex Osborne is away at school, and he’s just missed out in a few qualifiers to represent (Bermuda) in our events, so I know he’s extremly excited to be picked for this one.”The theme has been carried into the ladies team, where youngster Elizabeth Parsons will join the more experienced trio of Robinson, Ebonie Burgess, and Katrin Burnie,“Elizabeth Parsons, is still in junior golf, is still very young, and this will be an opening for her,” said Roy.BGA president Nick Mansell will join Roy in managing the teams at the games, which take place on the Isle of White from June 25 to July 1.
