Slam incentive for local golfers
For the first time in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf history, local golfers will get the opportunity to qualify to play alongside a major champion in the 2011 spectacle one of the Island’s most prestigious events.The PGA of America and the Port Royal Golf Course are making two Pro-Am tournament spots available for an event that will be known as the ‘Quest for the Best’.The Slam has been held in Bermuda for the last four years, featuring the winners of golf’s major tournaments. When those champions have been unable to play, another top Tour professional has been brought in as a replacementLast year the tournament featured current world number one Martin Maymer, Graeme McDowell, Ernie Els and David Toms.PGA senior directof of Championships David Charles said he was looking forward to see how the local amateurs would make out in their attempt to play alongside a major champion.“We look forward to this new Pro-Am qualifier bringing the Bermuda golfing community together and building on the great success and excitment we have felt for the past four years.”Every golf club in Bermuda has been offered the opportunity to host a qualifying event at its course.Golfers will play as a two-person team in a better-ball net competition.The top seven teams will receive entry into the finals which will be held at Port Royal on September 17.The winning team will be awarded spots in the Pro-Am as well as entry into events during the week of the Grand Slam.Entry fee is $250 per player, which will include rounds at the clubs the players will try to qualify at, as well as day passes to each day of the Slam and lunch at Port Royal.
