Sims finds form in BMW charity tournament
Sinking a monster putt in his final round, shown to TV viewers all around North America and Bermuda, might have been some consolation for Michael Sims at the Nationwide Tour’s BMW Pro-Am on the Thornblade Golf Club in South Carolina yesterday. And while he put together one of his best performances on the Tour in more than three years, he could be left ruing his final round of one-over par 72 which dropped him down to a 15th place tie and cost him thousands of dollars.Having made the cut a week earlier for the first time this year, the 31-year-old suddenly discovered the kind of form which many believe he is capable of on a regular basis.Sims made a stunning move up the leaderboard on Saturday when he shot one of the best rounds of the day a five under 67 on the Carolina Country Club lay-out, one of three courses used for the event which saw several celebrities joining the pros.A round that included an eagle on the par-four 11th hole left him in a tie for third at the end of 54-holes and left him with a real chance of contending for victory in yesterday’s last round. And he made a strong start, making the turn in two-under 33 which included two birdies but bogeys on the 11th, 13th and 17th undid his flying start.Carding his only score over 70 (72) after putting three rounds in the 60s, he couldn’t make a challenge he would have desperately wanted. His four days saw rounds of 68, 66, 67 and 72 for a total of 273 and earned him more than $8,000.TV saw him finish with a big smile on his face after holing out from one side of the green to the other but that smile would have been far wider had he managed to jump into the top ten.In a play-off, Garth Mulroy defeated Sunghoon Kang to take the $108,000 first prize.Sims wasn’t the only player to endure a difficult day as third round leaders England’s Greg Owen and USA’s Travis Hampshire dropped out of contention.
