Sims in the hunt again

For the second time in three weeks, Bermuda golf pro Michael Sims finds himself in the top 10 heading into the weekend and in contention for his first ever Nationwide Tour victory. After a sensational five-under-par 66 on the opening day of the Rex Hospitals Open in Raleigh, North Carolina, he folowed up yesterday with a second round one-under-par 70.And although he would have desperately wanted to go even lower and perhaps repeat his first round score, he’s still among the leaders, having dropped from a fourth-place tie to tenth.Starting on the back nine at the par-71, 7,257-yard TPC Wakefield Plantation course, Sims got off to a flying start with a birdie on the par-four 10th. But bogeys at 12 and 14, and another birdie at the fifth left him at even-par at the turn.Coming home he bogeyed the third but bounced back with birdies on the fifth and eighth. On Thursday he had soared up the leaderboard with six birdies in seven holes to card his 66.Today, known as ‘moving day’ when the pros need a low score to maintain their challenge for the title, Sims will be chasing another sub-par round to stay in the hunt for a first place prize of $99,000.Two weeks’ ago, the 31-year-old based in Georgia, was in a tie for third place after the third round at the BMW Pro-Am at the Thornblade GC in South Carolina where he carded a five-under 67 on the Saturday. But all of his good work came undone in the last round when he recorded a one-over par 72 and dropped to 15th which earned him $8,000.This weekend he could pocket far more if he can put together two more solid rounds at a course which was designed by three-time US Open champion Hale Irwin and was opened in 2000.At the end of yesterday’s play, Sims was just four shots adrift of leader Scott Brown who moved from 25th overnight to first with a superb eight-under-par 63.That put him one stroke ahead of fellow American Martin Flores.
