Augustus and Mitchell tied for the lead

Big hitter Daniel Augustus on his way to shooting a two-over par 73 at the Bermuda Open at Port Royal Golf Course yesterday.June 19,2011

Daniel Augustus had one of those days on the greens when nothing would go in, and still managed to come away with a tie for the lead after the first round of the Bermuda Open.Augustus and Jordan Mitchell both finished with two-over par 73s at Port Royal Golf Course, with last year's runner-up, Brennan Webb, three shots further back.Despite a topsy-turvy round Augustus still came close to breaking 70, but a series of bad bounces and lipped putts ultimately cost him a sub-par start.A front nine that included two bogeys and three birdies gave way to a back nine that started well, with a birdie at 10, but then got progressively worse.Augustus' woes on the greens cost him at 11 and 13, and then a wayward tee shot at 14, which saw him go into the heavy rough was compounded by another putt lipping out.The loss of four shots in four holes was too much for the Bermuda professional, who saw a birdie go begging at 16 when another putt didn't drop.“I hit the ball not too bad, but I had a couple of bad bounces, some unlucky breaks, and on this course that turns a 67 in to a 73,” said Augustus.Such was Augustus' misfortune with the putter yesterday that even on the practice green after the round his ball was still lipping out.Jordan Mitchell meanwhile also suffered on a back nine that ruined several players' rounds yesterday. The American bogeyed the first, but then rattled off eight straight pars to reach the turn at one-over.Another bogey at 10 was erased by a birdie at 12, but the tricky 14 also claimed Mitchell as a victim, as did 16, although he picked up a birdie at 17 to stay level with Augustus.Webb is out on his own in third, although Nick Jones and Dwayne Pearman are only a shot further back. Pearman and Webb play in the same group in today's second round, going out alongside Scott Roy at 10.30am, while Augustus tees off at 10am with Andrew Bissell and Ryan Roberts. In the Men's Amateur division Spencer Wideman has taken an early lead with a three-over par 74, while Ryan Benevides is a shot further back. Benevides produced the best round of Bermuda's Island Games golfers, of the rest, Damian Palayandi withdrew for personal reasons before the tournament started, while Alex Osborne carded an eight-over par 79.If for some reason Palayandi's issues prevented him from travelling to the Isle of Wight next week then Roberts is the first alternate, and he is in a tie for fifth in the amateur division after an opening round of 78.Jarryd Dillas, a pre-tournament favourite, has some work to do to catch the leaders after he also had a poor day on the greens.Several times Dillas saw putts that seemed destined to go in find ways of staying out, and that, coupled with some errant tee shots saw him card a 10-over par 71, seven shots behind Wideman. Two of the female contingent of the Island Games squad played in the women's division, where Ebonie Burgess has already opened up an eight shot lead on Katrin Burnie. Burgess carded a 10-over 81, Burnie an 89, while Burgess' team-mate, –13-year-old Elizabeth Parsons shot a 34-over 105.Meanwhile, the seniors tournament begins today, with Hav Trott looking to defend his men's title against the likes of Jeffrey Lindo and Terry Mullan.See the Gazette's website (www.theroyalgazette.bm) for a slideshow of photographs from yesterday's action.http://www.royalgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/tngallery?Site=RG&Date=20110616&Category=SPORT&ArtNo=616009992&Ref=PH
