Jordan Mitchell marked his first trip to Bermuda with victory in the Bermuda Open at Port Royal over the weekend. The American shot a final round four-over par 75 to win the tournament by two shots ahead of Brennan Webb.Mitchell went into Sunday’s final round leading by five shots and managed to hold on ahead of his main rival who finished as runner-up for the second year in a row. While Webb’s loss last year came at the final hole, this time around the tournament was over as a contest much earlier, and while Webb’s final round one-over par narrowed the gap, it was never likely to be enough to overhaul an opponent who played solidly all week.Mitchell has only recently turned professional and competes on one of the same tours, the Peach State Tour, as Michael Sims, and he handled the par-71 lay-out better than anyone over the four days. He was the only professional to shoot an under-par round, and his 75 was his worst 18-hole score of the week.Webb, meanwhile, went away having come second once again but never really hit the heights of previous years, and might be thankful that he wasn’t the only one that struggled on the greens.Daniel Augustus, who finished third, certainly didn’t have the best of times with his putter but was still the top Bermuda professional and picked up a nice $1,500 cheque for his troubles. In the men’s amateur division, overnight leader Scott Clark had his worst round of the tournament on Sunday, shooting a seven-over 78 but still finished 10 shots clear of runner-up Jarryd Dillas, who was 27 over par for the four days.Clark’s triumph capped a perfect week for the American, who was celebrating his 50th birthday this week, and last played in the tournament 28 years ago.The loss of Ebonie Burgess with a wrist injury all but handed the women’s title to Katrin Burnie, and she made no mistakes in the final round to win ahead of Elizabeth Parsons.Burgess, who is part of the golf team that leaves for the Island Games on Thursday, withdrew after the second round as a precaution after feeling a slight twinge in her wrist.Team manager Scott Roy confirmed that there was no damage but that Burgess hadn’t wanted to jeapordise her Games spot.Roy also confirmed that Damian Palayandi would still be playing. The Bermuda amateur withdrew the morning of the first round with a flu bug, but has fully recovered and will be making the trip.Meanwhile, Hav Trott successfully defended his senior men’s championship, beating Terry Mullan into second by nine shots, while Synda Perry won the senior ladies’ title.
