Parsons backing her team-mates to shine
She may only be 13-years-old, but Elizabeth Parsons is already making her mark on golf in BermudaThe youngest member of the golf team competing at the Island Games next week, Parsons finished her preparations by finishing second in the women’s open division at the Bermuda Open this past weekend. Her performance may be a sign of things to come, but Parsons is backing team-mates Laura Robinson and Ebonie Burgess to star at the Games and is happy just to be along for the ride.“I think that Ebonie (Burgess) and Laura (Robinson) will take the gold and silver medals at the Island Games,” said Parsons. “They have won them in the past and I mean, have you ever seen them play?“Ebonie can “crush” the ball and her short game is totally amazing!“For me, it was only one year ago that I was overjoyed to break 100 in a tournament, then I broke 90 and now I am hoping to break 80.“I am excited to represent Bermuda and I am just thrilled to play alongside players like Ebonie.”Things haven’t been easy for the teenager since she got her Island Games call-up, and her game collapsed for a while as she was exposed to the kind of pressure that goes with representing your country.“It is an honour to be chosen to go to the Island Games because this is such an important tournament,” she said.“It is a thrill to be playing with other members of the team because they are such amazing golfers.“When I was selected I was really excited. Then I began to feel a lot of pressure because everywhere I went people were asking me about it and making comments telling me that I had to do a fantastic job and everyone would be watching and my golf game totally fell apart for awhile.“My parents told me to remember that I play golf because I like it and to forget about my score and concentrate on having fun again.“It was hard because I didn’t want to let anyone down but one day I just went out and played golf with my golfing friends and had a ton of fun and my game is back on track. I now realise that for me, the Island Games are all about the experience.”Not that Parsons doesn’t plan to put that experience to good use.The young golfer is already planning on her next Island Games trip, and is determined to win the tournament one day.“In the future, I plan to win this tournament and while every tournament I enter I will try to win, I am okay with the fact that this year will be my year to gain experience, so that in the future I can win for Bermuda,” she said. The next six months promise to be a busy time for Parsons. Her trip to the Isle of Wight marks the beginning of a busy summer when she will play in a host of tournaments both at home and abroad.Next month she will try to go one better and win at the Phoenix Match Play in which she finished as runner-up in 2010 and was the only girl who took part. After that comes a visit to PGA headquarters in Palm Beach to play in the Optimist Championship representing the Bermuda Junior Golf Association, followed by the Ross Blackie Junior Tournament to be held at Tuckers Point, Mid Ocean Club and Port Royal.“At this point I have no idea where golf will take me in the future, I will just continue to practise and play because I like it,” said Parsons.
