Tourism to help revive Goodwill tourney

Bermuda Department of Tourism will step up its effort to help the 60th Goodwill golf tournament recapture its former glory after a record low attendance at this year’s event. The Goodwill, one of Bermuda’s oldest golf tournaments, attracted just 46 teams, including local clubs, with some overseas teams needing Bermuda players to make up their foursome. But in conjunction with To A Tee Bermuda, whose owner Alex Madeiros organised this year’s event, Tourism will now help launch a ‘a significant marketing and promotional campaign’, according to a press release sent out by the Department yesterday.“A revised tournament structure will be implemented that will see a new Tournament Chairperson leading the charge to make the tournament the best ever,” added the statement.“A significant marketing and promotional campaign, assisted by the Bermuda Department of Tourism, will ensure that the 2012 Bermuda Goodwill will be a success as a signature event on the sports tourism calendar.”This year’s entry was some 20 teams less than a year ago and far less than in previous years when 80 or more teams flew in with professionals and three amateurs. It was considered by the Tourism Department as one of the Island’s major sporting attractions.Madeiros, who will be stepping aside from his duties involving the Goodwill, said the complacency of all those involved with the event and lack of target marketing in the current economic climate had led to its demise.“Tourism has always been on board and it is great to see them becoming more involved in this tournament.” said Madeiros yesterday. “We have been very complacent in regards to this, not just myself but everyone involved and we felt a need to review our marketing view.“We found, unfortunately, that in the climate of recession a lot of teams that we have been going to coudn’t afford to make the trip, and we had no one to replace them, hence the drop in numbers.“What we hadn’t done is looked to replacements and deals for those who were struggling to still be able to come here, so that was what we need to do, promote it more aggressively and we will utilise some of the professionals and amateurs to get teams here to pay.“We want it to return to the 90 or 100 teams playing, so we have to cast our net out a little wider to get to this mark, this is our main goal.”With a new head to be chosen to take Madeiros’ place in the near future, he can now move onto his new job at the Port Royal Golf Course after his involvement, noting his new job and the Goodwill would cause a conflict of interest.“I’m stepping down as I am taking a new position at the Port Royal Golf Course in January, so I’m moving myself completely out of the picture so someone from my office can deal with it going forward.“It would be a conflict of interest to me between the two, we have discussed this and are hopeful that everything works out.”This year’s tournament saw Lambton Golf and Country Club ‘C’ of Canada winning both the senior gross and net divisions. The club captured the overall net title in the Senior Division and even outplayed their junior opponents, posting a remarkable overall total of 46-under par over the 72 holes.
