Sims seven shots off the lead

Michael Sims comfortably made the cut at the e-Golf Tour’s River Landing Open after carding an even-par 72 in yesterday’s second round at the River Landing Country Club in North Carolina. The Bermudian pro endured mixed fortunes as he collected five birdies and as many bogeys to take his two-day total to 142, some seven shots off the lead which was held by David Robinson, who recorded a 69 yesterday. He fired a two-under par 70 in the first round. And he will need to make a weekend charge to get among the leaders.Sims parred the opening two holes before surrendering two shots with successive bogeys at the par-three third and par-four fourth holes.A birdie at the par-five fifth enabled the former Bermuda Open winner to move back to one over par. But another bogey at the par-three sixth put Sims back at two-over.He eventually made the turn at one-over after carding a second birdie at the 543-yard par five seventh.Better fortunes awaited Sims on the back nine where he made three birdies and two bogeys to enter the clubhouse at even par for the day.The 33-year old pro birdied the par-five 13th and 15th holes as well as the par-four 16th. But bogeys at the par four 14th and par three 17th holes dashed any hopes of making further inroads on the leaders.Provisional results showed Sims in a tie for 34th, well within the projected cut.The former University of Rhode Island student began the tournament on solid ground after carding a two under par 70 during Wednesday’s opening round at the 6,942-yard, par-72 River Course.Last week Sims sent shock waves reverberating around the globe after firing a record 12-under par 59 at the eGolf Tour’s Southern Open in North Carolina where he finished runner-up behind American Drew Weaver.
