Papadopoulo takes four-shot lead
Julian Papadopoulo opened up a four-stroke lead in the 16-18 division of the Bermuda Junior Golf Association International Classic during second round action yesterday at Mid Ocean Club in near perfect conditions.Papadopoulo continued his good form from tee to green, finishing with a four-over par 75, despite having five three-putts in his round. In contrast to his sluggish finish in round one at Tucker’s Point, Papadopoulo eagled the par-five 15th on his way to covering the final four holes in two-under and now leads Scott Gilbertson by four strokes.Gilbertson’s second round mirrored a similar plot to his first . . . he followed an even-par front nine with a disappointing back nine to finish with a 78 to slip back slightly going into today’s final round at Port Royal.Papadopoulo and Gilbertson have put some distance between themselves and the field in what has become a two-man race for the title, with Aaron Railton a further eight shots behind after an 86.Cory DeSilva picked up one shot on his nearest competitor with a round of 85 to Justin Dixon-Watt’s 86.In the 13-15 age division, Walker Campbell was the low man, closing the gap on first round leader Evan Watkins with an 83.Watkins remains in the lead by one shot heading into the final day after his round of 86. James Robertson and Jordan Saunders are in a tight battle for third place, with Robertson only two shots ahead after his round of 98 and Saunders’ 91.Both Robertson and Saunders usually play from the red tees and stepping up to the white tees on three of Bermuda’s premier courses is proving a tough task for them. Khari Place was the fifth player in this division. However, he has been forced to withdraw for medical reasons.Lone female competitor Elizabeth Parsons steadied her round on the final eight holes, covering that stretch in five over par after a tough opening 10 holes. She finished the round with an 89.Players in the 12 and under division all struggled in the heat and none moreso than young Kenny Leseur who learned the hard way that players have to avoid Mid Ocean Club’s more treacherous bunkers as he came in with a round of 133.Brady Cordeiro was the low man of the day in this division by 10 shots, shooting an 82 despite two triple bogeys. He heads to his home course tomorrow with an 11-shot lead over Benjamin Barnett.Play begins today at 10.30 with 16-18 division leaders Papadopoulo and Gilbertson starting their round at 11.10.
