Top local golfer Jarryd Dillas will be among those vying for a potential invitation to next year’s Masters Tournament during the upcoming 32nd US Mid Amateur Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois. The Bermudian amateur qualified for the tournament after finishing an impressive third in a qualifying field of 112 golfers at the Country Club of Salisbury in North Carolina - the same venue where Dillas’ compatriot Michael Sims fired himself into the golf history books with a stunning round of 59 at the e-Golf Tour’s Southern Open earlier this summer. The US Mid Amateur Championships is open to amateur golfers 25 years or older with a handicap index not exceeding 3.4.The tournament will see participants play two rounds of stroke play before the field is slashed to 64 players that will go on to play six rounds of match play to determine the eventual winner.Dillas has kept himself busy in the lead up to the upcoming US Mid Amateur Championship and is determined to put his best foot forward when the tournament gets underway this Saturday.“I’ve been fortunate enough to play in some big amateur tournaments this summer, so I feel like I’m very well prepared and I’m really looking forward to getting started on Saturday morning,” he said.Earlier this year Dillas became only the third player to win three Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships men’s titles on the trot after defeating Fraser Hunt four and three in the 36-hole final. The 27-year-old golfer believes that his recent success in the match play format should serve him well in Illinois. But he is wary that he must first make the cut to advance to the business end of the tournament.“I just have to put two solid rounds together in the stroke play portion and give myself a chance to progress through the draw,” he said. The US Mid Amateur Championships will be held September 8-13.The United States Golf Association (USGA) accepted 3,810 entries for this year’s championship with the winner likely to receive an invitation to next year’s Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.Next month Dillas will turn his attention to the World Amateur Team Championships in Antalya, Turkey. The Bermuda Golf Association has selected William Haddrell, Hunt and Dillas to represent Bermuda at the prestigious Eisenhower Trophy to be held October 4-7.“It’s always an honour to play for your country,” Dillas said. “We have a very strong team and I know that we’re all eager to get out there and represent Bermuda to the best of our abilities.”
