Dillas fails to make the cut
Bermuda’s Jarryd Dillas bowed out of the 32nd US Mid Amateur Championship in Lake Forest, Illinois at the weekend.The top local amateur golfer failed to make the cut after carding successive rounds over par during the 36-hole stroke play phase of the tournament played over two separate courses.Dillas carded an 11-over-par 82 during Saturday’s first round at the 7,078-yard, par 71 Conway Farm Golf Club and followed that up yesterday with an equally disappointing 12-over-par 83 at the 7,148-yard, par 71 Knollwood Club.That left the Mid Ocean Club member in a tie for 243rd with a two round total of 165, 23 shots over par and well shy of the cut.Dillas carded just one birdie all weekend but managed an eagle at the par five, 16th during Saturday’s opening round.Others failing to make the cut in Lake Forest at the weekend included Thomas Strange, son of two-time US Open champion Curtis Strange.The 32nd US Mid Amateur Championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play, with the low 64 scorers among the field of 264 players advancing to match play featuring six rounds, including a 36-hole final to commence on Thursday.The tournament is open to any amateur golfer who is 25 years old by September 8 with a United States Golf Association Handicap Index not exceeding 3.4.Dillas, 27, qualified for the 32nd US Mid Amateur Championships earlier this year after finishing an impressive third in a qualifying field of 112 golfers at the Country Club of Salisbury in North Carolina - the same venue where compatriot Michael Sims fired himself into the golf history books with a stunning round of 59 at the e-Golf Tour’s Southern Open.The reigning Bermuda Amateur Match Play Champion will now turn his attention to next month’s World Amateur Team Championships in Antalya, Turkey.Dillas is among a trio that also includes William Haddrell and Fraser Hunt that will represent Bermuda at the prestigious Eisenhower Trophy from October 4-7.
