Veteran golfer Jones dies, 73
One of Bermuda’s most successful and highly respected professional golfers, Eardley Jones, has died at the age of 73.Winner of several local tournaments, Jones had spent the last several years working with junior players, the driving force behind a flourishing novices programme.He had taken a number of youngsters overseas to play in tournaments, including the World Junior Championships, often paying some of the expenses out of his own pocket.His work was recognised by the Ross (Blackie) Talbot Foundation which helped provide funds for one of his tours.His son, Nick, is also a professional golfer, having emerged from his father’s programme.Jones was one of those credited with integrating golf in Bermuda. Up until the late 1960s black golfers were not permitted to play in local tournaments.He leaves wife, Jeanette, and six children Zina, Jeana, Marina, Eardley, Nicholas and Catherine.
