Bubba takes credit for Meade’s super debut
Bubba Watson will happily take the credit for Robin Meade’s eye-catching round during yesterday’s Grand Slam Pro-Am at Port Royal Golf Course.Watson shared a few tips with the CNN Headline News anchor prior to her tee-off and believed she looked a far better player than a novice with just seven lessons under her belt.Meade announced her rival on the big stage with one of the best shots of the tournament, perhaps thanks in no small part to the expert advice from Masters Champion Watson. Her approach shot to the eighth green with a five-hybrid landed just three feet away from the cup, earning her the top prize for the closest approach to that particular hole.“Yes, my first lesson under the gun with a camera and fans watching,” Watson said of his impromptu coaching lessons with Meade. “She almost made a hole-in-one. I think I did pretty good. If they were all like that I would make tons of money.”Watson said it was pleasing to see someone of Meade’s stature get bitten by the golf bug and revealed that the pair now followed each other on Twitter.Meade and her team won the Pro-Am with a combined total of 54.“It was funny, she started Tweeting the last week about me and I was like, ‘what is she talking about,” he said.“I didn’t know anything about her, so I started following her on Twitter because she was following me.“That’s how I knew I was playing with her in the Pro-Am. It’s nice to see someone of her stature come over here and love to play the game of golf and learn it late in life.“She was walking down the fairways telling me how much she loves it and how much she enjoys learning something new.“She played a lot better than her third time out on the course, and especially when I instructed her really good.”Although Port Royal is a relatively short course, Watson, who revealed he had become unlikely best friends with teen pop sensation Justin Bieber, believes it’s deceptively long and will test this year’s elite foursome.“It’s a short golf course but they have it in a way where it plays longer. You can lay up off the tees or you can try to go for some things with the right wind.“The first hole, I didn’t know what to do. I hit driver over the trees into the water, so have to lay back off of that. It’s a short course but they make it play longer than it really does.”Watson and his wife Angie celebrated adopting a one-month son, Caleb, just a few weeks before the 33-year-old won the Masters. While claiming the prestigious green jacket was a special moment, Watson said he would gladly have given it up to become a dad.“Being (at the Grand Slam) is special. That means you’ve done something great to get here. It’s an honour to be here.“The same time I won my Masters, we adopted a son, so being a dad has been the best part. I would give up the green jacket any day of the week for my son.”Watson and Keegan Bradley spent yesterday morning defacing the ‘fathead’ posters of the foursome which emblazon one of the main walls inside the clubhouse.According to Watson, his handiwork, which consisted of him drawing a beard on Padraig Harrington’s wall picture, had been more creative that Bradley’s“At the University of Georgia we learned to draw inside the lines,” said Watson. “I think it is St John’s where Keegan went, they need to work on their art programme, because he has to scrub and paint that wall again since his is not coming off.”Webb Simpson has plenty of reasons to believe he was always destined to play golf in Bermuda.US Open winner Simpson’s parents honeymooned on the Island, as did his wife Dowd’s, and the devout Christian admits he couldn’t imagine of a more apt place for his first Grand Slam.“(Port Royal Golf Course) is beautiful, I have never played a course with views like this place,” said the 27-year-old.“It’s a fun week, a celebratory week and I can’t think of a better place to spend it that right here.“My parents had their honeymoon out here, and when I married my wife I figured out shortly afterwards that her parents honeymooned here. I think I was bound for this place.“It’s my first time here and I’m so glad that it’s for the Grand Slam.”Simpson played in his first major just over a year ago and admits he is simply striving to become a better player and establish himself among golf’s leading names“I’ve got to stay true to what I’ve been telling you guys for the last couple years that all I care about is improving,” said Webb, who turned professional in 2008.“You know, statistically this year, I made half as much money as I did last year and I won half as many tournaments but I feel like I’ve gotten better. I feel good about that.“And I think whether I win five times next year or win zero, I’ve just got to continue to strive to get better. There’s so many great players right now, so many young guys coming up, and if you don’t stay hungry and stay after it, you’ll get passed, so just keep my drive and keep trying to improve.”
