Sims cards even par Q event

Michael Sims’ push to regain a PGA Tour card continued yesterday in the second stage of Q School at the Plantation Preserve Golf Course in Plantation, Florida. But he won’t have been particularly pleased with his opening round of even-par 71 which left him eight shots off the lead. The number of players who advance to the gruelling five-round final stage has yet to be decided.Sims is currently in a tie for 38th in a field of 78.His round yesterday included two birdies on the first seven holes but he then carded bogeys on the par-four eighth and the par-three 15th.However, he remains only three shots behind the 12 players who are tied for 11th, a position which will almost certainly guarantee a qualifying place at the end of the 72-hole tournament. The second round will be played today, Sims knowing he needs to post a sub-par round to keep his hopes alive. In the first qualifying round last month he scraped through by the skin of his teeth, making the cut by a single shot.
