Rock ‘n roller Horowitz ready to take centre stage
Rock singer Joe Horowitz hopes to hit all the right notes when he returns to defend his title at next week’s $60,000 Gosling’s Invitational at Belmont Hills. The former Canadian Tour player claimed a second Gosling’s Invitational title at last year’s event after finishing one shot ahead of nearest rival Nick Kenney. He was joint winner with former PGA pro Mike Donald in 2008 after a play-off failed to separate the two men. After battling it out during a final round that lasted nearly seven hours the pair decided to call it a tie in fading light.Horowitz’s preparations for his title defence in Long Beach, New York have been hampered by the trail of devastation super storm Sandy left in its wake.“Long Beach was the epicentre of it and we had six feet of water in our house and it was a mess,” said Horowitz, who has recorded two albums and performed alongside musical legends Don Felder of the Eagles and Rascal Flatts’ Joe Don Rooney in concert. “Some of our town still doesn’t have power and our golf courses are still shut down.“But I will never blame anything else for whatever happens on the golf course because once you get in a tournament you have to get focused and I’ve had my whole life to practise. So in the grand scheme of things it’s not the end of the world that my practise schedule was interrupted. I’ve had worst practise and warm ups and then showed up to a tournament and won.”Horowitz admits the pressure is on to defend his title but is confident he will be equal to the task.“There’s always a little pressure of repeating but in golf you feel you can win every tournament and the fact you’ve actually won makes you believe more that you can win it again,” said Horowitz, who is also a songwriter and guitarist. “You don’t have to prove to anybody else that you are capable of winning and the fact I did win and my name is on the trophy is less distracting than not having won.”Horowitz has made a few alterations to his technique since missing out on US Open qualification by a single shot earlier this year.“My game has been in a transitional mode since early July not that I’m proclaiming I’m going to stink in Bermuda,” he said. “I have been working on a couple of swing changes and thoughts because golf is one of those things you take two steps back to make four steps forward.”Other overseas pros expected to be thick in the hunt this year include past winners Bill Walsh, Joe Henefeld and PH Horgan III. Another past winner, Dwayne Pearman, is expected to lead the local charge along with Daniel Augustus.Among the notable absentees this year are former Senior European Tour player Delroy Cambridge and Bermuda’s Terence Daniels. Cambridge was runner up behind Henefeld in 2009 while Daniels finished third in 2010.Also defending their titles at next week’s Gosling’s Invitational are last year’s top amateur Gray Yancey (USA) and senior Hav Trott.A total of 96 golfers have registered for the tournament, 42 pros and 54 amateurs. The 2012 Gosling’s Invitational will be held November 26-29 and is to be preceded by a Pro-Am to take place this Sunday.
