Mitchell makes a second-round move
Jordan Mitchell leads the field at the midway stage of the $60,000 Gosling’s Invitational at Belmont Hills. The American pro fired a five-under-par 65 during yesterday’s second round to open up a two-shot lead over nearest rival Brian McCann who also entered the clubhouse at five-under.Mitchell, who started the round in second behind overnight leader Matthew Hoffman, carded six birdies including four in a row on the front nine. His only hiccup was at the par-four 15th which he bogeyed.Mitchell also came to within a whisker of claiming the Club Car Villager 4 on offer at the 178-yard, par-three seventh hole for any golfer making a hole in one. His laser approach from tee to green lipped out of the cup, much to his dismay. However, there would be no denying the American from surging to the top of the leaderboard after dipping to eight-under-par 132 for the tournament.Canadian McCann would’ve snatched the lead himself had he not made double bogey at the par-four eighth hole and a bogey on the last hole. Not only did those blemishes prevent him from taking over top spot, it also took some of the shine off the nine birdies he also carded to remain in the hunt.Making the biggest surge in the leaderboard was former Port Royal head pro Eric West who carded the second lowest round of four-under par 66 to climb from 21st to fifth.West’s impressive round contained eight birdies and four bogeys. He made the turn at three under for the round after draining back-to-back birdies on the third, fourth, fifth and sixth holes. He also reeled of consecutive birdies at 10, 11 and 12 to cap a fine day with the putter.Day-one leader Hoffman fell slightly off the pace after coming in at one-under-par 69.The Canadian had six birdies and five bogeys that left him three shots off the lead in third after 36 holes.Defending champion Joe Horrowitz slipped from third to fourth after coming in at one-under-par 69 in a round that included five birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey at the par-four 13th. The American rock singer remains five shots off the lead at three-under par 137 for the tournament.Bermuda’s Dwayne Pearman shot a three over par 73 to slip from fourth to a share of ninth with compatriot Daniel Augustus who came in at one over par 71 for the second straight day.Bermuda’s Chris Garland and Hav Trott protected their lead in the amateur and senior divisions.Garland shot a five over par 75 that included two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey at the par three 11th to remain five shots clear of nearest rival Joshua Cabrera. Defending amateur champion Gray Yancey (USA) dropped from second to third after coming in at ten over par 80.Trott carded a one over par 71 that contained three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on the last hole to maintain a five shot cushion over nearest rival Jeffrey Lindo who also carded a one over par 71.Professional Eric Joncke and senior Jim Vaughan have both withdrawn through injury. The Gosling’s Invitational continues today at the 6,017-yard Belmont Hills lay-out.
