Sims slips on third day of Q School
A double bogey on the par-five seventh hole derailed Michael Sims’ charge up the PGA Q School leaderboard at the Nicklaus Tournament course in La Quinta, California yesterday.Sims had started the day in 59th place in the 172-player field after carding a three-under-par 69 at the PGA West Stadium course on Thursday and a one-under 71 at the Nicklaus lay-out on the opening day of the six-round tournament. But yesterday he slipped down to 99th after returning a one-over-par 73 which left him at three-under for the tournament on 213 after 54 holes. He picked up just one birdie yesterday, at the par-four 14th, and made par at the remaining 16 holes, once again failing to gain shots at the four par-five holes. However, with three more rounds remaining the leaderboard will almost certainly fluctuate over the weekend.Bermuda’s 33-year-old pro goes back to the West Stadium course today looking to emulate his first round there. At the end of Monday’s final round 25 players will have booked a spot on the PGA Tour and the next 50 will play next year on the second-tier Web.com Tour where Sims played two years’ ago before losing his card.Regaining at least that card will be his target over the next three days, although no matter where he finishes he will received certain exemptions to play on the Web.com Tour in 2013.
