Sims hopes fade in Q School
Despite carding only one round over par in the first five rounds of PGA Q School, Michael Sims’ hopes of ensuring a card for either the PGA Tour or WebCom. Tour next year appear to have vanished.After finishing one-under for his two rounds over the weekend, he dropped to 116th place in a field which, after withdrawals, numbers 167.Rounds of 71,67,73,71 and 72 at the two par-72 courses in La Quinta, California have left him on four under par with leader Steve Bowditch on 23-under.After today’s final round in the 108-hole event, the top 25 will earn a spot in next year’s PGA Tour while the following 50 will secure places on the Web. Com Tour.The rest, including Sims, will have to rely on exemptions to play on the second tier tour in 2013, where the 33-year-old Bermudian plied his trade two years’ ago.Normally the most inconsistent of golfers, capable of shooting an earth-shattering 59 as he did earlier this year on the EGolf Tour in Carolina one of the few players who have recorded that magic number in the history of the game he often self implodes.That hasn’t happened at Q School this time but consistency doesn’t look like it will be enough, even with a blazing finish today.He’s currently five shots off those on minus nine who, if they remain in that position, will finish in the top 75.On Saturday at the Nicklaus Course, Sims posted a one-under-par 71 including an eagle, birdie and a sole bogey which left him in 109th position.Yesterday at the Stadium Course he needed a birdie at the par-four 18th to finish at even par.He’d started with a bogey at the first hole and went two-over with another dropped shot at the ninth but recovered somewhat on the inward nine, birdieing the par-four 15th before adding another at the last.
