Dillas to face Knight in first round

Jarryd Dillas begins the defence of his Bermuda Amateur Match Play men’s title today at Mid Ocean when he takes on Richard Knight in the first round. On the women’s side, a new champion will be crowned after last year’s winner Kathy Lloyd-Hines was unable to compete because of other commitments, leaving the 2012 beaten finalist, Katrin Burnie, as the top seed.Dillas, chasing an unprecedented fourth straight title, is the top seed and should get past his opponent who is the lowest seed in the field of 16. However, Dillas has vowed not to take any opponent lightly ... even on his home course.“In stroke play you get the cream rising to the top at the end of four days, whereas in 18 holes at any level anything can happen,” Dillas told The Royal Gazette last week. “In match play good breaks and good fortune do tend to come into it because it is only over 18 holes.“I feel more pressure as I make my way through the bracket but you always have pressure in the first round because you want to get past your first round match. As the week goes on there is the expectation of winning again and becoming the first player to, maybe, win it four in a row and I’m sure there will be a lot of pressure with that.”Fraser Hunt, who lost to Dillas four and three in last year’s final, is not competing this year. Other matchups will see second seed Spencer Wideman taking on 15th seed Jose Luis Gerardo while third seed Chris Brough takes on Walter Jackson and 2010 and 2011 finalist and fourth seed Nick Mansell goes up against Geoff Piggott. The women’s field has just nine entries — ten before a back injury forced Valerie Nearon to pull out yesterday — and as such there will be just one match today between the eighth and ninth seeds Susan Frith and Gladys Chambaz to reduce the final to a final eight prior to Friday’s quarter-final and semi-final rounds.Katrin Burnie is the top women’s seed while Linda Down is seeded second, Ebonie Burgess third and Ann Symonds fourth. The 36 hole finals are scheduled for Saturday.See scoreboard page for today’s starting times, beginning at 7.36
