Roberts left stunned by Open win

Jevon Roberts won the amateur division on his Bermuda Open debut at Port Royal this week.

The last thing Jevon Roberts expected after carding a 21-over-par 92 during the opening round of this week’s Bermuda Open at Port Royal was winning the amateur crown. But that’s exactly what the 31-year-old golfer achieved on his Bermuda Open debut.Roberts clinched top honours in his respective division via a playoff win over Port Royal stablemate Scot Barnett who blew a ten shot lead on the final day of the 72-hole stroke play event. The five handicapper sealed the deal after two putting for par on the par four, 18th after Barnett made bogey.Roberts admitted that his victory surpassed his expectations by far.“I wasn’t trying to win it,” he said. “I just wanted to go out and have a good tournament and see if I can play.”Roberts’ chances of glory appeared bleak following a disappointing opening round in blustery conditions that left him ninth in a field of 12 amateurs.“After I shot that 92 I thought that was the end of the tournament for me,” he recalled.“I thought it was going to be hard to come back from a 92. I didn’t think I had much of a chance but I didn’t give up. I fought on and tried to make every shot count.“They say you can’t win a tournament on the first day but you can certainly lose it, and that’s what I thought I did after that 92. But then I followed that up with an 80 which was a 12 shot difference which felt better.”Roberts carded a 13-over-par 84 in the third round to come to within ten shots of Barnett’s lead heading into the final 18 holes. His final round five-over-par 76 was his lowest score playing from the black tees at Port Royal.“All I was trying to do on that last day was break 80 for myself because I know I can go out there and shoot a good number,” Roberts said. “My pride got in the way and I didn’t want to go out there and shoot anymore high numbers.”Roberts admitted he had the jitters going into the playoff with Barnett his first playoff in tournament play.“I was definitely nervous going into the playoff,” he said. “I hadn’t hit any balls and had been in (the clubhouse) for an hour. I didn’t think it was going to go to a playoff so I had no reason to go out to the range or hit any putts. I was just there thinking I’d finished second.“I’m just glad that I was able to fight hard for all three days not knowing what was going to happen.“In golf you never know and unfortunately Scott had a bad fourth round and I had a good day. That’s golf so that’s why it’s important to battle for every shot.”Playing an extra hole in the playoff nearly landed Roberts in hot water with wife Ally.“I was a little late for my wife’s birthday dinner,” he grinned. “But fortunately she gave me a free pass being that I won.”Looking at the list of past winners on the trophy and knowing that my name is going to be on there too is a pretty good feeling to be honest.”
