Smith misses out on US Open Championship
Camiko Smith came up short in his bid to qualify for this year’s US Open Championship.Competing at this week’s 18-hole US Open local qualifier at the 7,243-yard Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the local pro carded a one-over-par 73 that left him four shots shy of making the cut and progressing to the next phase of qualifiers.Smith’s round included two birdies and three bogeys.Amateur Nick Pandelena and pro Mike Welch topped the field after firing identical five-under-par 67s to keep their qualification hopes intact.Next week will see Smith’s Port Royal stablemate, Dwayne Pearman, try his luck at qualifying for this year’s US Open when he tees off at the 18-hole local qualifying event at Atlanta National Golf Club in Atlanta.Since 1895, the US Open has been a democratic championship, offering entrants an opportunity to play on golf’s biggest stage alongside golf’s biggest names. Thousands of professionals and amateurs with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 1.4 have filed entries to compete in this year’s US Open.The 2013 US Open will be held at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania June 10-16.The eventual winner will earn qualification to October’s PGA Grand Slam of Golf to take place at Port Royal Golf Course.
