Bermuda’s Michael Sims will resume his bid to regain a PGA Tour Card in Plantation, Florida this week.

The professional golfer is set to tee off in today’s opening round of the Second Stage of Q School at the par-72 Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club.

The number of qualifying positions and those tied for the last qualifying position that will advance to the Final Stage of Q School will be announced during the 72-hole qualifier.

Sims, 34, overcame the first hurdle on his quest to regain a PGA Tour card for next season at last month’s First Stage of Q School at the Lantana Golf Club in Texas.

The past Bermuda Open winner finished in a four-way tie for 22nd with a four-round total of five-under-par 283.

The top 32 finishers and ties all advanced to the Second Stage of qualifiers.

Last year saw Sims advance to the Final Stage of Q School at the Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club where he finished in a two-way tied for 11th at 12-under-par 272.

But much has changed since then with the course’s distance extended to 7,148-yards.

“The golf course is playing longer than it has in the past,” Sims told The Royal Gazette. “They have added a few new tees and the course is a little wet from the rain recently.”

Sims, who turned pro in 2002, earned a year’s exemption on the former Nationwide Tour in 2006 after finishing in six-way tie for 75th at the Final Stage of Q School in La Quinta, California.

He lost his PGA Tour card the following year but has since managed to earn partial exemption to the Web.com Tour where he finished 123rd on this year’s Tour money list with $30,201 in earnings.

Sims played in 17 events on this year’s Web.com Tour, making four cuts.

His best finish was a tie for ninth at the BMW Charity Pro-Am Presented by SYNNEX Corporation.

The University of Rhode Island graduate heads into this week’s Second Stage of Q School feeling upbeat about his chances of achieving his primary objective.

“I feel great about my game,” he said. “I had a good week of practice and I’m looking forward to playing this week.”
