Sizzling Sims boosts Q School chances
Michael Sims surged up the leaderboard at the Plantation Preserve Golf Club in Planatation, Florida yesterday to enhance his chances of reaching the Final Stage of Q School.
Teeing off on the back nine, the Bermudian pro fired a sizzling six-under-par 65 — the second lowest score of the day — to enter the clubhouse at four-under par, 138 at the halfway stage of the Second Stage of Q School.
That left the former Nationwide Tour player tied for 23rd after 36-holes, three places adrift of the qualifying position for next month’s Final Stage of Q School.
Sims’ superb round contained seven birdies and a solitary bogey.
The past Bermuda Open winner made a sluggish start to the round after dropping a shot on the first hole (par five, tenth) but rolled in three birdies to make the turn at two under par for the round.
Sims then carded four additional birdies coming in to place himself within striking distance of his qualifying objective heading into today’s penultimate round.
“I played well today,” Sims told The Royal Gazette. “I hit the ball solid and made a few putts.
“I had one bogey and seven birdies, so overall it was a very solid round.”
Yesterday’s solid showing compensated for the two-over-par 73 Sims signed off in the first round that left him tied for 61st.
The top 20 and ties will qualify for the Final Stage of Q School.
Three players, Dan Berger, Nathan Tyler and Chris Scialo, held a share of the lead at 11-under-par 131 after two rounds.
Four players carded yesterday’s lowest round of seven-under-par 64.
