Juniors on display in 31st Fecchio Cup
Some of the Island’s best young talent will be on show over the next three days when the Bermuda Junior Golf Association stages the Aon Benfield Fecchio Cup at Port Royal Golf Club.
The 54-hole strokeplay event is in its 31st year and some interesting contests are expected in the three divisions. In the 16-18 division, there is a small but strong field featuring Cory DeSilva, one of the most in-form golfers and winner of the past two BGA Monthly Medal events, playing alongside Sam Wehmeyer, the defending champion, and Arriek Douglas, who is back from school in Florida. Also in the field is Mykal Donkin, a newcomer to the BJGA, who is attempting to make his mark in his first big event, while Jordan Saunders will be aiming to pull a surprise in his final year on the junior circuit.
The 13-15 division is the BJGA’s most closely contested week to week and it is expected that the first significant event of the year will be no exception. Every player in this division has been working hard on his game over the past year and there are a number of players looking to challenge Brady Cordeiro, the 2013 champion, on his home course.
Port Royal members Alex Mason and Benjamin Barnett will be aiming to capitalise on their local knowledge, while Dakota Lamb, Mikus Ming and Kheary Swan will be hoping their hard work bears fruit. Joe Waters, 12, is playing in this division for the first time and is keen to test himself against his older competitors.
The open Red Division is a late amendment from the 12-and-under division to ensure that players of similar ability are able to compete against each other, regardless of age. Kenny Leseur has been fairly dominant in this division over the past couple of seasons. However, he could be pushed all the way this week by a field of rapidly improving players, led by Joe Watson and Tyler Emery.
Luke Watson is back from boarding school and another relative newcomer, John Dragonetti, is making his debut in a BJGA event of import. Alex Withers-Clark, an aspiring footballer, is taking advantage of the break in his preferred sport and stands out as the dark horse.
