Alcott hopes to get women into the swing
Port Royal will provide the backdrop for a corporate charity tournament featuring LPGA Tour and Legends Tour players next year.
Amy Alcott, the LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famer, is on Island helping to lay the initial groundwork for the 36 hole pro am, scheduled to be held in September 2015.
The American, who has 33 professional titles to her credit, including five majors, has agreed to be an international spokesperson for Port Royal and assist with the development of next year’s tournament as well as trying to encourage more women to play at the Southampton course.
“This is definitely a plus for golf in Bermuda — especially for women at Port Royal because we want to get away from the notion that we are not women friendly,” Alex Madeiros, the director of golf at Port Royal, said.
“Amy has been very successful at other top golf courses where she has been able to help change that stigma. So we are going to utilise her expertise in that area to get the message out that Port Royal is for everybody of all ability and all genders.”
Madeiros said that Alcott is looking forward to playing an integral role in promoting Port Royal.
“She is very keen to come to Bermuda and work with us to put together an event that promotes Port Royal and Bermuda as well,” she said.
Proceeds from next year’s tournament will go to local charities, Madeiros added.
Alcott, 58, turned professional in 1975 at age 18 and claimed her first victory in only her third start on the LPGA Tour before going on to earn Rookie of the Year accolades.
Her first major championship victory came at the 1979 Peter Jackson Classic that was later renamed the Du Maurier Classic. She has also won the US Women’s Open and is a three-times Nabisco Dinah Shore champion.
Alcott’s 1991 Dinah Shore victory was her last on the LPGA Tour.
After the end of her touring days, the World Golf Hall of Famer started working in golf course design, forming part of the architectural team designing the golf course for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio.
Today will see Alcott host a cocktail reception at Port Royal.
She was also due to host a complimentary clinic on the driving range at Port Royal tomorrow. But the event has been postponed due to forecast of bad weather.
