Katyna Rabain has reached the final of the Executive Women’s Golf Association Championships in California in October after winning the Northeastern semi-final tournament in Plymouth, Massachusetts, last week.

Playing in windy, rainy conditions at the Pinehills Golf Club, Rabain emerged victorious in the August 22 tournament, shooting a low gross score of 89 from the white tees in the Championship Division. She was crowned the overall tournament champion for the Northeastern region.

As a result of the win, Rabain has earned a spot at the EWGA Championship finals to be held at the Westin Mission Hills Resort in Rancho Mirage, California, on October 30 and 31.

Six women from the EWGA Bermuda Chapter competed in the Northeastern semi-finals, one of 15 semi-final tournaments held across the United States in what is the largest women’s amateur golf tournament in the world. Representing Bermuda in the stokeplay division were Rabain (Championship flight), and Alia Hamza (second flight).

The scramble team consisted of Gina Bassett-Cook, captain, Victoria Cunningham, Anne Marie deGraft-Johnson, and Cheryl Shane.

The six members of the Bermuda team earned their spots at the semis by winning their respective divisions during the Bermuda EWGA Chapter Championships held at Riddell’s Bay in June.

The field at Pinehills consisted of the 76 winners from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Bermuda Chapter Championships.

“Thunder boomed as we stepped up to the first tee at 7.45am in the rain and we were concerned that the tournament was going to be postponed,” said Bassett-Cook, team captain and president of EWGA Bermuda.

“However, thankfully, the lightning moved away from the golf course and we were able to play a great, however wet, round of golf.”

The Bermuda scramble team placed fourth overall with a score of 72, while first place went to the team from Boston with a score of 69.

“The competition was stiff, however lots of fun,” added Bassett-Cook.

“All of the women were very welcoming to the Bermuda team and now in addition to winning their friendship, we have won their respect as serious contenders in this tournament.

“It is very fitting that Katyna, who was one of the founding members and helped to create EWGA Bermuda, will be representing the Chapter at the Championship finals in October.

“She will be a strong competitor and an excellent ambassador.”

The EWGA Bermuda was founded in 2012 and presently has approximately 70 members.
