Campbell eases into quarter-finals

Walker Campbell and Ebonie Burgess had contrasting wins yesterday in defence of their titles in the Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships.

Campbell was a comfortable 8 and 7 winner over Alex Hale in the Men’s Championship, while Burgess had to go the distance before edging Gina Zangrillo on the 19th hole.

Campbell will meet Fraser Hunt in today’s quarter-finals at Mid Ocean Club, while Burgess has a semi-final match with Valerie Nearon in the Women’s Championship, where she is aiming for a third straight title.

Nearon beat Susan Vallis 2 and 1 in another close women’s match yesterday, while Tariqah Walikraam stopped Linda Down 6 and 5, and Katrin Burnie got by Carol Jones 3 and 1 to complete the semi-final line-up today. Walikraam and Burnie will meet in the other match.

In the other Men’s Championship matches yesterday Hunt beat Michael Daniel 5 and 4, while Damian Palanyandi stopped Spencer Wideman 3 and 1.

Jarryd Dillas, who had four straight titles up to 2013, is in the hunt for another after beating Richard Neame 4 and 3. Dillas will play Palaynandi today.

The other matches today in the Men’s Championships will see Mark Phillips taking on Robert Vallis, and Ben Hodge playing Tom Nolan.

Phillips beat Scott Barnett 5 and 4 yesterday, while Vallis downed Mikus Ming 4 and 2. Hodge got by Jamie MacMillan 7 and 5, and Nolan defeated Andrew Osborne 4 and 3.

Two Senior Men’s Championship semi-final matches will also be played today, with Kavon Trott taking on Gray Yancey, and Edward Frey playing Terry Mullan.

In the Senior Men’s first flight, former cricketer Gary Brangman plays Harry Smith in the semi-finals, while Zane DeSilva takes on Ross Ballantyne in the other match.

• The deadline for entry into the Grey Goose World Par 3 Championship is today at 4pm.

Next weekend’s tournament at Turtle Hill Golf Club costs $250 for amateurs and $300 for professionals.

Amateurs can also buy a spot in next Sunday’s Pro Am, with places available from $125 per person.
