Fast start makes the difference for Ming

In control: Ming stands on the 10th tee at Belmont Hills Golf Club during the final of the Bermuda Junior Golf Association National Championships.

Mikus Ming successfully defended his national title with a 3 and 2 victory over Dakota Lamb in the Bermuda Junior Golf Association championships.

Ming took an early, commanding lead and was 6 up heading into the second 18 holes on Thursday afternoon.

Lamb, however, slowly reeled Ming in, picking up two holes in the front nine and another two in the next five holes to stand on the 33rd tee only two down.

A wayward tee shot from Lamb opened the door for Ming to regain control and he gratefully accepted, winning the hole and halving the next to complete his victory.

This was a somewhat less stressful defence for Ming after needing an extra hole to dispatch Arriek Douglas in the 2015 final.

In the red tee final Spencer Young finished the week as he started, on top, beating number two seed Ryan Clements 7 and 5 in the final.

After halving the first hole in bogeys, Young put together a string of pars to win three holes on the bounce and then Clements’s driver got away from him a bit gifting Young another three, putting him a commanding 6 up after seven holes.

A double bogey for Clements at the 9th put Young further ahead and despite winning a couple of holes to start the back nine, Clements’s revival was short-lived.

Young parred the difficult 13th to seal the victory and cap off a fantastic week.

In the novice division Owen Dibbley led from start to finish, taking the title by ten shots over his nearest rival.

From the first tee shot on day one, Dibbley channelled an early 1990s Jon Daly — gripping it, ripping it and doing it over and over again.

The battle for second place was tight all day with Oliver Betshart jumping from fourth to second by carding an impressive round of 46, his lowest of the week, pipping Noelle Weight by a single shot.

This week saw a great performance from Weight who was participating in her first BJGA tournament. Benjamin Betshart was fourth, just a single shot further back.

In the consolation stableford Samson Douglas beat Luke Watson by ten points in the championship flight, while Joe Watson took the red tee match play final 5 and 3 over Louis Hammond, a day after beating Hammond’s brother Rudi in the semi-final.

In the red tee stableford event, an eagle at the par 5 6th propelled Ethan Sousa to victory by four points over Kian Mooney.
