Indecisive Augustus misses South Carolina cut

Driven to distraction: Daniel Augustus was ten strokes off the cut in South Carolina

Daniel Augustus’s debut at the South Carolina Open came to an early end yesterday after he failed to make the cut.

An opening round three-over-par 75 at the Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, South Carolina, left the Bermudian professional with a lot of ground to make up to advance through to the final round of the 54-hole championship today.

It ultimately proved to be a task beyond his reach, with indecisiveness and a lack of commitment factoring heavily in his downfall.

Augustus carded a five-over 77 yesterday for a two-round total of 152 that left him ten shots over the cut line of two under.

“Indecisiveness killed me today and yesterday,” said Augustus, whose round yesterday included seven bogeys and two birdies either side of the turn. “It’s been my Achilles’ heel these past few events.

“Just going through the tunnel a bit with my golf game, working on a few things, and just need to commit better and cut out the silly bogeys.

“I was making bogeys from areas where I haven’t been in a long time and that just comes from lack of commitment, lack of decisiveness. So those are the things I will be working on coming into the qualifier [PGA Tour-sanctioned Bermuda Challenge] in a couple of weeks’ time. Committing to every shot that I hit and being decisive about it. Not second-guessing my ability or my talent, and believing that the shot that I pick is the right one.

“If you don’t commit to a golf shot, it very rarely goes well. So I need to commit better, be more decisive over the ball, know that that’s the shot and the club that I picked and stick with it. Pick one shot, play it.”

Augustus also found the going tough on Tuesday when he struggled most on the front nine, which he played at three over. This was despite rolling in an eagle at the par-five 3rd hole.

He fared much better coming in, playing the final nine holes at even par, to enter the clubhouse in 58th position.
