Leseur loses grip of shared lead in Florida

Mixed fortunes: Kenny Leuseur (Photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Kenny Leseur came unstuck when it mattered most competing at the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour Academy Cup in Florida at the weekend.

The promising golfer held a share of the lead in the boys 14-15 age group with eventual winner Jack Snedaker heading into the final round of the 36-hole championship at the Celebration Golf Course in Celebration.

However, the solid form he demonstrated on the way to an opening round even par, 72 the previous day eluded him as he carded a bogey-riddled eight-over-par, 152 to finish ninth among the field of 19.

The International Junior Golf student made a promising start to the final round as he played the first three holes at even par.

But a triple bogey followed by three successive bogeys either side of a birdie at the par 5, 6th hole saw him make the turn five shots over par and well off of the lead pace.

Leseur’s struggles then continued on the back nine where he carded four additional bogeys before closing out with a second birdie of the round at the par 5, 18th.

Snedaker carded a two-under-par, 142 to win the boys 14-15 title by five shots over fellow Florida residents Justin Bai and Reggis Zhu, who finished as joint runners up after shooting identical three-over-par, 147.

The HJGT was founded in 2007 with the aim of providing junior golfers between the ages of 8 and 18 an opportunity to play exceptional courses in a competitive environment.

It is based out of Jacksonville, Florida and is the largest junior golf tour in the United States.

In 2017, the HJGT struck a partnership with Nexus, an international hospitality and entertainment company backed by financier Joe Lewis and Tavistock Group, golfing great Tiger Wood and Ernie Els, and actor and musician Justin Timberlake. The partnership was established to help promote the game of golf and broaden the Tour’s reach across the United States and around the world.

Leseur will now turn his attention to the Bermuda Championship Qualifier at Port Royal on October 16 and 17.

The 36-hole qualifier will determine the final two local participants for the inaugural PGA Tour-sanctioned Bermuda Championship.

Local professional Dwayne Pearman has been granted a sponsor’s exemption from qualification for the main event and thus handed an automatic spot in the 72-hole tournament also to be held at Port Royal on October 31 to November 3.

The Bermuda Championship is a new addition to the 2019-20 PGA Tour and will involve professionals who do not qualify for the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in China this year.

The championship will involve 120 professionals and carries a purse of $3 million and offer 300 FedEx Cup points to the winner.

As a boost to Bermuda, the event will be broadcast on The Golf Channel in 225 countries.
