Consistent Higgs grabs a share of the lead

Harry Higgs produced another flawless display to grab a share of the 36-hole lead at the inaugural PGA Tour Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course yesterday.

The PGA Tour rookie shot a bogey-free and career-low six under-par, 65 to enter the clubhouse tied with overnight leader Scottie Scheffler and Brendon Todd at eleven under.

Higgs carded six birdies, three either side of the turn, and is the only player bogey-free through 36 holes in the field that are battling for a share of the $3 million purse and 300 FedEx Cup points at stake.

“I’ve had a good progression from Latin America to a good year on the Korn Ferry Tour, and now it’s just kind of seeing how my game stacks up,” the American said. “I’ve had good enough results to where I think it certainly does.

“This will be nice, this is my sixth event, to at least have a decent chance of winning to kind of really see how you stack up, see how well you can think, how well you can manage all the other non-golf stuff.”

Todd shot a career-low eight under-par, 63 which was also the lowest score of the round and only a stroke shy of the course record, set by co-leader Scheffler during the opening round.

The 2014 AT&T Byron Nelson winner carded eight birdies, including his last four holes coming in, and was also bogey-free during the second round.

Todd believes the Robert Trent Jones Sr-designed par-71 layout suits his game.

“It’s one of the shorter ones we play on the Tour and it forces everybody to hit the ball with the same clubs off the tee,” he said.

“The good thing about that for me is, I’m hitting the same clubs into the greens as everybody else and for some reason that tends to work out well in my favour. So, the course is good for me, for my game, and I’ve been swinging well.”

Overnight leader Scheffler, who started the second round with a one-shot advantage over the rest of the field, carded a two under-par, 69 which included five birdies and three bogeys.

“I didn’t have my best stuff today,” the PGA Tour rookie said. “My swing didn’t feel too good, I didn’t really make a lot of putts, but still shot two under.

“I hung in there pretty well and posted a decent number, so I’m in good position going into the weekend.”

One shot off the lead at ten under is the trio of Boo Weekley, Aaron Wise and Wes Roach. Wise shot 65, Weekley 66 and Roach 69 to remain thick in the hunt heading into the final 36 holes of the championship.

Russell Knox is alone at nine under after also posting a two-under, 69.

Among those failing to make the cut from a field of 120, that was made at two-under, 140, were Bermuda’s Michael Sims, Dwayne Pearman, Daniel Augustus, Jarryd Dillas and Kenny Leseur.

Sims carded a one under, 70 to finish at even par, Augustus at five over with amateur Dillas two shots back at seven over.

Leseur, the eighth-youngest player to play in the PGA Tour event at 15, finished at ten over and veteran professional Pearman at 17 over.

Sims, the former Web.com Tour player, posted the only sub-par round among the local players, a one under, 70 yesterday which left him just two shots shy of the cut.

Professional Sims and amateurs Leseur and Dillas all qualified after finishing tied for first in a 36 hole local qualifier also held at Port Royal last month. Pearman was granted a sponsor’s exemption while Augustus came in as the first alternate from the local qualifier.
