Somerset and St George’s to cross swords on the golf course
Ocean View Golf Course will host the fifth Cup Match Classic tournament featuring rival captains Jordan DeSilva, of Somerset, and St George’s counterpart Onias Bascome tomorrow.
Bascome has been included in St George’s team led by Ocean View head professional Brian Morris and fellow all-rounder DeSilva in Somerset’s team to be led by club member Kavon Trott.
The field will also feature 12 former players, including Somerset’s present coach Jeff Richardson, Mark Ray, Darrin Lewis, Dwayne Leverock, Quinton Sherlock, Lionel Cann, Delyone Borden and Sammy Robinson.
“It’s just awesome to see ex-Cup Match players mingling among the golf course,” Morris, himself a former cricketer, told The Royal Gazette. “Obviously they are all competitors, so the competition will be serious.
“We have 26 players per team and both teams will be represented with their Cup Match colours, so we are just looking forward to some good golf, clean fun and great camaraderie.”
Somerset are the defending champions of the 18-hole Stableford tournament, which each team has won twice to date.
The two teams will do battle for the coveted trophy as well as one-day passes to attend the third Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course from October 25 to 31.
“We have teamed up with the Bermuda Championship and they have generously donated one-day passes for each member of the winning team,” Morris added.
“This is our fifth year and it’s a big tournament that has been filled up already now for more than a week and is always well spectated.”
